Must Try
Do-it-yourself Candy
2024.10.26
Get up to date on something unique in Japan.
This episode let’s check out some snacks you can find here.
Japan has a lot of fun snacks, among them are "educational candies" made by the company Kracie, for children to learn by making snacks in a fun way.
Let me show you my favorite ones!
Nerunerunerune
First up, known as “Nerunerunerune”, this is the original "educational candy".
"Neru" means to blend, and is repeated in the name just as you mix many times.

Just blend the included powders and add water in the correct order for a delicious colorful snack.

The mixture becomes soft and fluffy, dip some in the candy bits and you're in for a sweet sensation!

Sweet, sour, with some pop!
You can dip the mixture several times.

Gumi Tsureta
Next up, “Gumi Tsureta” in grape and soda flavor.Another simple snack, but extra fun.
"Gumi tsureta" means “caught a gummy”

We mix the powders with water like the other, but with a much different result that tests skill.

By raising the bent straw up from under the powder, it hardens into a gummy, and can become quite long!

It’s a popular challenge on social media in Japan to see how long of a gummy you can make.

Tanoshii Osushiyasan
Tanoshii Osushiyasan, also known as “Poppin’Cookin’Fun Sushi Kit” in English.
This kit lets you make realistic sushi candy, from the rice to the fish roe, or “Ikura”.

This kit takes a little more skill and time, which is perfect for older kids, but even fun for adults.

Not only do these look real, but the texture might trick you too. Except these taste sweet and fruity.
Pretty impressive for mostly just mixing some powders together right?

Sukutte Kingyo
The final entry is Sukutte Kingyo! Like a popular game at Japanese festivals.

After mixing the ingredients, you can make a “net” that will be used to “catch” the fish.

With individually molded fish gummies, you can challenge yourself in catching them.

It may seem easy, but the net can break!
You can re-make the net by placing it in the solution.

Finally, once all fish are caught, you can mix the remaining ingredients together, and enjoy a big delicious jelly that’s also pretty to look at with the little fish gummies inside.

I hope you enjoyed this episode of Japan’s “Must Try!”
You can buy these educational snacks at most super markets, so be sure to try them out yourself!
